Pi Inline Tools

A UI-only Pi extension that makes tool activity more compact in the interactive terminal:

  • Shows tool calls as a one-line status and short summary.
  • Shows nested tool calls made by codemode.
  • Trims redundant spacing and hides thinking blocks in the displayed assistant message.
  • Keeps the original tool renderers and shows their output when a call is expanded.

It does not replace tools or modify tool results, provider messages, or stored session messages. The layout hooks are installed only for TUI sessions and restored at shutdown. The extension was tested with Pi 1.4.0; renderer internals may change between Pi releases.

Try it for one session

Install it for future sessions

pi install npm:@christofermendes/pi-inline-tools

Restart Pi after installing. To update or remove it:

pi update npm:@christofermendes/pi-inline-tools
pi remove npm:@christofermendes/pi-inline-tools

Run the tests

The tests use the jiti and Pi modules from an installed Pi release:

npm test

If Pi is installed outside the default ~/.pi/agent/install/releases directory, set PI_NODE_MODULES to the node_modules folder inside a Pi release before running the test.

For local manual testing without installing the package:

pi -e ./index.ts
